What I do in Medium Edits:

*everything in Light Editing*

  • change passive voice to active voice [esp. Fiction]

  • track the continuity of the plot, setting, and character traits [esp. Fiction]

  • enforce a consistent style & tone throughout the manuscript that the writer has implemented [esp. Fiction]

  • suggest heading and subheading redrafts marginal formatting for a parallel structure

  • flag inappropriate sayings and terms

  • flag ambiguous or incorrect statements (part of fact-checking)

  • eliminate wordiness and inappropriate jargon

  • ensure the key terms are used consistently (all the vocabulary lists and terms meet the criteria outlined by the publisher/publishing company)

  • assure the previews, summaries, front matter, and back matter reflect the content [can include Fiction]

  • eliminate trite words and tone

  • rewrite sentences for smoother transitions

  • redraft sentences instead of flagging errors

  • assign new levels of headings for a logical structure

  • enforce a uniform tone, level, or focus the publisher/publishing company/substantive or developmental editor specifies
